Detoxification Made Easy
The changing of the season brings to mind the need for spring and fall cleaning in our households. Finding the time to perform this necessary task seems to be the greatest hurdle of all.
Same goes for health and detoxification. We know the changing of the season works well as a guideline to begin internal body cleansing. Unfortunately more often than not we fail to make this a regular part of our lives. Most people are well aware of the positive health benefits of detoxification, but are searching for simple solutions that are practical and sustainable.
The great news is that there are many great supplemental products available that can fit into many daily regimes without too much effort or fuss. Some have recommended diets associated with them while others may not.
There are no hard and fast rules to detoxification although it is generally recommended that a slower, gradual cleansing is better to any type of rapid detoxification program. Toxins can build up in the body through repetitive use or exposure to chemicals found in cleansers, detergents, food additives, preservatives, synthetic materials, air pollutants, drugs and so much more. The rapid release of too many of these toxic substances may (in extreme) cases damage the organs of elimination and more often than not, produce unpleasant side effects that could be avoided. Here are some simple steps to be used daily that can reduce the build-up of toxins in the first place:
Let's Start with the Easy Ones!
1) Add fresh squeezed lemon (or lime) to your water. It adds a great flavour, but lemon also benefits bile production which supports the liver.
2) Increase daily water intake. In general, aim for 8, 8oz glasses of water each day
3). Drink a few ounces of non-sweetened cranberry juice each morning. Cranberry juice has many health benefits, but also supports detoxification.
4) Eat your vegetables! If for some reason this is not an option, invest in a high quality greens supplement.
5) Increase fibre each day. Aim for the recommended 25-35 grams each day. Use a fibre supplement if necessary
6) Consume high quality lean protein like whey protein
7) Reduce the intake of processed foods, simple sugars (soft drinks, sports drinks, fruit juices) and refined pre-packaged foods 8) Reduce/remove coffee, high fat foods, alcohol, over the counter medications and cigarettes
9) Use hydrotherapy. Alternate between hot and cold water temperatures in the shower to aid circulation
10) Start deep breathing. Take some time at your desk or in traffic and start belly breathing!
The major organs of elimination include the liver, kidneys, lung, skin and lymphatics. The liver tends to be one of the major players in cleansing as this organ is responsible for metabolizing substances that enter our body into less harmful products so they can be removed from our system. Ideally, if the liver is functioning optimally throughout the year, cleansing becomes a little less difficult. Hence, the beneficial concept of prevention!
As always, get back to the basics. Plenty of rest, exercise and water. A healthy diet consists primarily of ample vegetables and fruit, whole grains and lean protein. A daily multivitamin ensures the necessary nutrients support the health of the body and contribute to its optimal functioning.
