Is CLA an Effective Weight Loss Supplement?
There are no quick fixes for weight loss, if there were, the world would be thin. Also keep in mind the number that shows up on the scale is not necessarily indicative of how healthy you are. There are many thin unhealthy people and vice versa. Your ideal weight should really be determined by how healthy you feel and are, how active you can be, how much energy you have, how much visceral fat your body is carrying (that fat under the
skin that affects organs), the status of your blood pressure and heart health etc. But the reality is that we all want to look and feel our best and thus we search for weight loss programs and supplements that may help with achieving our goals, regardless of what they are. There are no quick fixes for losing weight, but there are some supplements that show promise for controlling blood sugar, such as Berberine or those that help with sugar cravings, such as Gymnema Sylvestre or Garcinia Cambogia, which may reduce appetite. But one other supplement that shows promise not only for fat loss, but also for its other health benefits (such as fatty liver, & cholesterol), is CLA (Conjugated Linoleic Acid). Some studies have shown that CLA may decrease lipid storage by increasing the rate of fat breakdown in fat tissue. CLA has also been found to help reduce total fat mass and reduce body fat percentage. It seems that CLA works by interfering with fat storage. It can penetrate fat cells, even those in visceral fat which is the stubborn belly fat. It helps turn existing fat into energy instead of just storing it. At the same time, it also helps to develop lean muscle tissue, which in itself helps to burn fat.
Understanding Supplementation with CLA
Whole food supplements are an emerging category in natural health and as such, there will be many brands scratching to get into this market. Keep this is mind before you purchase these products because the process of keeping foods in their whole state must be done with utmost care to ensure the integrity of the ingredients and all of their micro nutrients. If your whole food supplement is cheap, they may have cut some corners and may not be using the true definition of a whole food supplement. Natural Factors has a full line of Whole Earth and Sea supplements that formula is vegan friendly.
Precision Extreme CLA also adds green tea to its formula for the added health benefits that green tea provides for weight loss and for energy. To gain the benefits of CLA, your supplement should contain at least 80% CLA and you need to consume 3-4 grams a day which equates to 3-4 1000 mg capsules a day (take one with each meal). It is important to note that in order to see the benefits of CLA supplements, you need to be consistent with the daily dosage which can be very difficult to maintain. There are powdered versions now available such as Alora Naturals CLA Burn which is a yummy option. If you have health concerns, it is wise to speak to your health care provider. You must avoid CLA supplements if you are pregnant, nursing or have diabetes. Less serious side effects of CLA supplementation include excessive flatulence, bloating, nausea, and diarrhea.
