Understanding Whole Food Supplements
Whole food supplements are not a trend, but an emerging category that consumers are embracing. More of us reach for them due to an increased need to augment our diets with vital nutrients lacking in our food sources. The thinking is that if you eat healthy you will not need to take any supplements. However, ask any individual, even those that are committed to a healthy lifestyle, how difficult it can be to eat the required
number of veggies, fruits, proteins and healthy fats while still consuming sufficient fibre. So, our intention to eat all those great foods is there, but the opportunity to do so is not as easy to achieve. Whole Food supplements present another option – sort of like the bridge between foods and supplements. But before we can explain what a “whole food” supplement is, we need to first explain what a “whole food” is. Food of any sort is considered a “whole food” if it is unprocessed or unchanged in any way. These include fruits, veggies, nuts, eggs, fish and whole cuts of meats. When food is left in its “whole state,” it contains naturally occurring proteins, fats, and carbohydrates. They typically provide micro and macronutrients such as trace minerals, vitamins, antioxidants, phytonutrients and amino acids. It is these vitamins, minerals and nutrients that you require for good health. Sadly, they are lost through over-harvesting and processing of our food sources. Whole Food Supplements are made by combining blends of concentrated dehydrated (dried) foods into powders, tablets or capsules. If you are consuming whole food organic supplements from a dedicated manufacturer, you are reaping the benefits of the entire plant, including bio-enhanced ingredients and micronutrients. Whole food supplements offer free-state nutrients, which keep the integrity of the food intact, increase bioavailability and maximize absorption. Whole Food supplements are nutrient dense, contain all parts of the plant or herb; they include the natural occurring micronutrients of the plant or source and provide better bioavailability (absorption by your body).
Can You Be Sure Your Supplement is Whole Food?
As with any emerging trend, everyone wants in on the action. Unfortunately, this also means that some manufacturers may cut a few corners to get their products to market. There are very few “Whole Food” Brands in Canada today. We suggest the Natural Factors Brand, called “Whole Earth & Sea.” The Whole Earth & Sea product line contains a broad spectrum of vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and phytonutrients in a single tablet. The “Whole Plants” in its
products are harvested from Natural Factors Canadian farms when they are at their peak of potency. They are immediately raw processed at its facilities, using a specific type of technology (EnviroSimplex®), which blends the raw materials in a special chamber, where enzymes, probiotics, and prebiotics help to culture the raw mix that it calls Farm Fresh Factors™. This biomass is used for its supplements and contains the raw nutrition of whole plants. The result is a supplement-derived whole plant from nature’s superfoods. Some of the products within the “Whole Earth & Sea “product line include Whole Earth & Sea Pure Food Vegan Bioenhanced Vitamin D3, sourced from wild-harvested lichen. This unique non-GMO formula, developed for vegans and vegetarians, who are more likely to lack this essential nutrient. Whole Earth & Sea Pure Food Sunflower Vitamin E contains d-alpha tocopherol from non-GMO sunflower seed oil. It is ideal for anyone looking to avoid soy-based vitamin E supplements. Pure Food Multi-Vitamins such as Men’s Multivitamin & MineralMen’s 50+ Women’s Multivitamin & Mineral & Women’s 50+ and a Prenatal, all of which are raw based vegan and food sourced multivitamins for all adult ages. Whole Earth & Sea Fermented Organic Greens or Whole Earth & Sea Fermented Organic Protein & Greens both of which are 100% fermented and certified organic formulas containing fermented grasses, fruits, vegetables, and micronized medicinal mushrooms.
