Are Mushrooms Medicinal?
There is undoubtedly growing research on the benefits of mushrooms (we are not talking about the white button mushrooms, we are talking more about the exotic sounding ones) such as Reishi, Shiitake, Maitake, Turkey Tail, Cordyceps, etc. Whether you believe they are medicinal or not may depend on personal use and experience. From a personal perspective, I use them for an autoimmune disorder, and if it weren’t for the use of medicinal
mushrooms to help stabilize my immune system, I would not have been able to bring the situation under control. So, what are they? Medicinal mushrooms are adaptogens, meaning they help the body adapt to stressors and bring it to balance. They are also immune modulators, which means they improve immune function, whether your immune system is deficient or excessive. As an example, some immune system diseases (autoimmune conditions) are caused by an overactive immune system, such as rheumatoid arthritis or lupus. Medicinal mushrooms may help to calm and stabilize the overactive immune responses. In other cases, such as cancer and some viruses, medicinal mushrooms may help to encourage better T-cell functioning to recognize the attack of foreign cells, reducing their adverse effect on the body. They contain a large number of components called polysaccharides, glucans, flavonoids and other micronutrients, providing therapeutic benefits for immune health, anti-ageing, anti-cancer and virus protection.
Different Mushroom Function Differently
Each of the specific medicinal mushroom species has its distinct combination of polysaccharides, allowing them to boost the immune system in slightly different ways. You may often find medicinal mushrooms sold as a combination product, such as PURICA Complete 360 Stress Relief & Immune Support, which is a blend of Medicinal Mushrooms to support immunity, strengthen the body’s response to stress and optimize health. A combination mushroom supplement is often a good choice for overall immune health. Chaga is commonly used for
vitality and good health and is widely used for autoimmune disorders. Lion's Mane is used to help support the brain and central nervous system. Turkey Tail has been known to help inhibit the growth of cancer cells. Cordyceps helps to strengthen weak immune systems and adrenal depletion caused by physical, dietary and environmental stress factors. It repairs, nurtures and supports the adrenal system and works with the endocrine system to balance hormone levels. Red Reishi can help calm the nerves, kidney system and reduce inflammation. One of the newest methods to consume mushrooms is through mushroom drink mixes. Purica has a full line of powdered mushroom Zensations that combine cocoa powder, and pending the formulation, other herbal ingredients and the mushrooms featured in this article, into a latte to create a soothing drink.
