Vitamin B12 Far More than Energy

You most likely have heard about B12, are taking it or know someone that is, but why is it so popular? Vitamin B12 is one of the essential B vitamins you find in a complex. It is also sold and most often used as a stand-alone supplement. Its popularity is due to its vast array of benefits, and the likelihood of B12 deficiency is quite high. Its primary sources are meat,
milk & eggs (often not part of restrictive diets). B12 deficiencies tend to develop among vegetarians, the elderly, people with intestinal disorders (such as Crohn's) and digestive disorders. Vitamin B12 deficiency can cause fatigue, muscle weakness, shortness of breath, dizziness, numbness, heart palpitations, poor appetite, anemia, depression, confusion, poor memory, and lack of concentration. B12 is necessary to keep your blood, nervous system and heart healthy. It even helps make DNA — the genetic material in your cells. It fuels our brain, metabolism, & affects our digestion and how we absorb food. By helping to produce red blood cells, Vitamin B12 helps prevent a type of anemia that can cause fatigue and overall low energy, and for this purpose is often found in iron supplements.

Surprising benefits you may not know about B12

Supplementation with Vitamin B12 has been shown to help reduce some pain sensations (tingling, prickling sensations that are associated with neuralgia and diabetic neuropathy.) We all know that folic acid (one of the B vitamins) has a critical role in the formation of the fetus, but studies also show that the fetus brain and nervous system require B12 to develop properly as well. There is substantial research that shows a deficiency in B12 can cause an increase in homocysteine levels, which is a risk factor for
cardiovascular disease. There are a few ways to take a B 12 supplement, sublingually (under the tongue), tablets, in a liquid for or our newest favourite is Mega Food Vitamin B12 Gummy. Mega Food uses whole foods and removes all those colours and preservatives for its B12 Gummy, and since gummies are a smaller dose, they are a good choice for an everyday pick me up and for pregnant moms. They are also a lot more fun to reach for. We do suggest that if have health issues, such as intestinal disorders, anemia or fall into the category of restrictive diets that you consider a higher dose Vitamin B12. Mega Foods does have a plant-based version called MegaFood® Vegan B12 with a blend of B6 and folic acid for physical and mental energy.
